There’s a lot of talk about personalizing treatments
for cancer patients, but what does this really mean, and what benefits does it
bring? Dr. Fernando Rivera, Head of Medical Oncology at Valdecilla Hospital
(Santander, Spain), sheds light on this:
“Not only do we have increasingly effective antitumor
treatments, but these treatments are also becoming more personalized. Every
patient’s tumor is unique and must be thoroughly characterized at a molecular
level to determine the best possible treatment for that specific individual.
Moreover, a patient’s tumor evolves over time, meaning molecular
characterization likely needs to be repeated periodically.”
“We now have more advanced technology to molecularly
analyze tumors, and this molecular diagnosis of cancer is critical for
providing the right treatment. Research in this field is booming, and molecular
diagnostics are becoming more precise, detailed, and data-rich. Managing this
data is often complex, and in the future, artificial intelligence—already under
investigation—could play a key role in helping us.”
